New Zealand Visa (NZeTA) — Introduction

All passengers travelling to New Zealand by plane or cruise ship require a visa. The only exception is travellers with a New Zealand or Australian passport. Applying for an NZeTA online is the cheapest, fastest, and easiest way to complete your New Zealand visa requirements. Before applying, ensure you meet all requirements — for example, the maximum length of stay is 90 days per visit.

What is NZeTA?

The NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) is the electronic visa exemption for New Zealand. Travellers who apply for an NZeTA online do not need a traditional visa stamp from an embassy. The NZeTA is digitally linked to your passport upon approval and is comparable to the eTA for Australia and Canada. The NZeTA is also sometimes called the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authorization or New Zealand online visitor visa.

Who Needs an NZeTA?

You must apply for an NZeTA before travelling to New Zealand if you:

  • Hold a passport from a New Zealand visa-waiver country
  • Are a permanent resident of Australia
  • Are a cruise ship passenger, regardless of nationality

What is the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy)?

All NZeTA applicants must also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). This levy is collected at the time of your NZeTA application and goes directly towards protecting New Zealand's environment and improving tourism infrastructure. The IVL is a mandatory requirement for all NZeTA holders.

Travelling Through New Zealand

Do I Need an NZeTA for New Zealand Transit?

If you are passing through New Zealand on your way to another country, you may still need an NZeTA or a transit visa. Here is what you need to know:

  • International passengers can only transit via Auckland International Airport and must remain in designated transit areas or on board their aircraft.
  • You can stay in New Zealand for less than 24 hours without entering the country on a transit NZeTA.
  • Only New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and Australian citizens do not require an NZeTA to transit through New Zealand.
  • Citizens of all other eligible countries must apply for an NZeTA or transit visa before arriving.

New Zealand Cruise Ship Visitors

NZeTA for Cruise Ship Passengers

All cruise ship passengers arriving in New Zealand — regardless of nationality — must hold a valid NZeTA or New Zealand visa before departure. Key information for cruise travellers:

  • More than 25 cruise ships visit New Zealand's shores each year.
